Happy Endings

These are but a few stories that make all of our efforts worthwhile, and give us the strength and inspiration to carry on our work for those creatures who cannot speak for themselves. Do you have a happy ending story that you'd like to share? Please email us your story with the subject line "Happy Ending." Be sure to include a photograph or video link of your pet posing with his/her new adoptive family!

Beetle and Bailey

"Hi, I'm sure you don't remember me, but I adopted two of your Danish Delights about 6 weeks ago. Thought you might like a current picture of them.

Originally, I named them Dum and Dew, but I ended up changing it because I couldn't call Dum, Dum, he's too smart. Their names are now Beetle and Bailey after the Army cartoon character.

They are doing well and growing fast. They are about 19 inches at the shoulders and weigh 37lbs and some ounces - they are only 2 ounces apart. They go for their final set of shots the end of August. We are still working on potty training.

When it comes to finding something to get into they are terrors. I put a hand of bananas on the kitchen table and Beetle climbed up on to a chair, grabbed the bananas and ran away with them. For some reason he really likes bananas."

Franco
"Hi, Remember me...I'm Franco AKA Fudgeball.  My Family adopted me from the shelter on December 20, 2007 when I was just 3 1/2 months old.  As you can see in the pictures, I am a happy puppy and share time with Tasha, my other family dog.  She finally got used to not being the only one to get all the attention, I like getting more attention than she does and I make every effort to make sure that happens.  I am happy because my  family loves me and takes good care of me.

Tomorrow,  I am going to get neutered; I'm a little nervous but my mommy says that after I will not keep humping by bed so I guess that's a good thing.

Here I am at one of my best poses and I threw in a couple more because I am  so cute and lovable!!!!!

Thank you JAC & Doreen for rescuing me and giving me a loving family and home."

Josie and Madison
"Here is a picture of Josie (in front) and Madison.  It was taken around Christmas.  Madison loves to wrap herself up in blankets.  When we adopted them from JAC in August 2006, their names were Daisy and Tulip. They are doing great and we just love them!  Needless to say, they're spoiled rotten.  Josie has more personality than a lot of people I know.  She always looks like she's thinking about something. Madison is still a little skittish when it comes to loud noises and fast movements.  But, instead of cowering in a corner and shaking, now she comes right back.

They are still like two Siamese twins.  They have to be near one another.  I'm glad they weren't separated.  I'm not sure they could get along without each other at this point.  They are very typical beagles.  Very curious and they're so smart.  Like all dogs, they love to go for long walks (especially near the woods so they can sniff) and car rides.   They sleep in the bed with us and get offended if we don't let them up.

Our other beagle, Casey, really enjoys the company, but knows she is the queen.  She'll be 15 years old next month. Anyway, just wanted to let you know they  are doing great and we are so glad we have them. Arlene Putnam"

Sadie
"Hello,   Thanks for your call.  We are really loving having Sadie.  She’s a big mush.  I’ve attached some photos including her first meeting with her new best friend Sirius who lives in Montclair and will be vacationing with Sadie this summer.  We were very pleased to see how well they received one another.  Sirius taught Sadie how to fetch in the yard before we headed home to Boston.   Thanks again."

Tallulah Belle
"About a year ago, we adopted Tallulah Belle from JAC. She was about 8 weeks old.  On April 17, 2008 our daughter was walking Tallulah Belle. As she was attempting to cross a street a car struck our daughter. Tallulah Belle immediately ran down the street alerting everyone.

People heard her and were looking to see what happened. A neighbor who saw Tallulah Belle said she was running with a purpose. She ran directly to our door and cried in a tone I have never heard before.  Our one neighbor ran over when she saw Tallulah. When I opened  the door and saw Tallulah my heart sank knowing something had happened to my daughter.  Tallulah wanted desperately to show me where to find our daughter. As we were leaving the house  two neighbors came by to tell me the news. Luckily, a miracle took place and our daughter will make a full recovery.

Now Tallulah is known as 'Lassie' in our neighborhood but she is 'Wonder Dog'  to us. We rescued her and now she has returned the favor."

Scarlett
"Hello everyone. I apologize for not sending you pictures sooner. But...Scarlett is doing just fine. She is the perfect addition to our family. Everyone just adores her. She has adjusted nicely and is quite spoiled if I must say. She has her own comfy little bed and loves playing in her yard with the children. On weekends we often go to our family shore house in LBI and Scarlett likes to watch the birds on the water. She doesn't quite care for the children getting too close to the water though ( It must be her mommy instincts). She's a great lifeguard! Scarlett is our third child; we couldn't imagine life without her! I will follow up with some more pics in the near future. Thank you for our amazing lil girl Scarlett."

  Ginger
"Ginger is doing great and they love her despite a little food/toy aggression. They are working on that with her and won't give up until it is resolved. She can't stop following and licking Eric, as you will see in the pictures."

Yo-yo
"Hi Ruth,

We adopted Yo-yo about three weeks ago. She is a wonderful addition to the family. Not only is she well trained, she has been adjusting to home life in our house like she has always lived there. The most recent update is that the cage is no longer a place she sleeps in; it only houses some of the toys we have for her. Her first vet visit was sucessful. She received a clean bill of health.

She been left alone all day a few times, and we came back to a home perfectly intact. Yo-yo has strong teeth, as she almost always smiles with that mischief smile but we finally got toys that are strong enough to last her more than a few hours, and she can see real enjoyment out of them. We play frisbee, and the newest toy is a plain baseball. She is a regular catcher.

She been trustworthy with me in allowing to bathe her. She is do for another bath after running around Central park yesterday. It was her first day at real socializing and she got an "A." I have enclosed some pictures you can share with your staff.

Everyone was so wonderful with her and us. I would recommend anyone to adopt a pet from your shelter. Not only is it clean, your staff is warm, friendly, caring and patient. I want to thank you for taking in animals and giving them a loving place until they find a family they belong with."

  Bubba
"My boyfriend and i adopted Bubba this spring. He has been nothing but a wonderful addition to our family. I can't imagine not having him around the house. He is so sweet natured and loves walking in the woods and going to the dog park. He's become used to sleeping on the couch and playing with our other dog, Pebbles, even though Pebbles runs the house."

Savannah
"We adopted Savannah on 6/28/06 (though she was known as Georgia at JAC). She has made every day an adventure full of playing, running, and of course, napping.

Savannah is a great addition to us and we are so happy to have been able to rescue her.

I've attached some pictures as she has grown up. Thank you again for helping to bring her into our lives."

  Candi (Vanessa)
"We adopted Vanessa back on October 20, 2006. Our family had just lost 2 older dogs (14 + 16) less than a year ago and after a mourning period were ready to add to our 'family' again. I'm a big proponent of saving dogs rather than 'buying' them, so we began to look for a dog on Petfinder.com. We saw the picture of Vanessa and fell in love immediately. I drove up to JAC to see what they were about and to meet the dogs. It was a pretty good drive (they are in South Orange and I live in Edison), but I can tell you it was well worth it! JAC's staff was very professional and answered all my questions. When they brought out Vanessa, I fell in love immediately! Very playful and happy...what do you expect from a puppy? I brought her home that day and we re-named her 'Candi.'

As you can see, Candi has 'adopted' to our environment very quickly! She loves to lay with us in the bed and has taken to the kids just fine. She loves to run around and play very much! See? She even got into the holiday spirit and dressed up for Halloween! Hehe...Candi has become one of our family and we are very blessed to have her.

Thank you so much, JAC, for all your hard and noble work! Hopefully more people will also help 'save' animals by adopting as well!! Keep in touch!"

Sasha
"Thank You!

The puppies are about 6 months old now, I adopted them on November 5, 2005 and it has been great at my house ever since. I lost my beloved Rottweler Tori on October 1, 2005 and swore I would never go through that pain again until I saw Sasha on Petfinders. She had a face I just couldn’t forget, I was eager to meet her and take her home, along with maybe one of her puppies. When I got to JAC and saw she had two little girls left, I knew I just had to have them both. Sasha is the best behaved dog with a wonderful temperament, she takes great care of her little girls, is very loving and as you can see from the picture, she loves to eat. The puppies are sweet and loving, they put a smile on everyones face. My family and friends just visit to see them. I know Sasha had 8 puppies and wonder often how the other 6 are (ettig54@aol.com). I want to thank everyone who had a part in rescuing Sasha and her puppies."

Sincerely,
Brigitte

Wacko
"Hello,

We just wanted to tell you guys how Wacko is doing. Just to remind you Wacko was the Pomeranian mix adopted on 11/10/05. He is a very energetic, lovable, smart pup who just loves everyone. Everyone who sees him wants him for themselves and thinks he's the best looking most adorable puppy in the world. We are currently in the process of house training him and guess what? He won't go potty anywhere else but the newspapers we lay for him downstairs. He can't go outside yet b/c his Vet told us not until next month when he finishes all his vaccinations but we can tell he's looking forward to it. Wacko has learned to sit, lay down and heel. We love this guy so much that we bought it Health insurance just in case. We love this handsome guy. "

  Banjo
"I just wanted to send you some pictures of the little boy my boyfriend Ken adopted on Sunday, December 3rd. Since he was only in the shelter for a day, he did not have a name, but he was being called Harry by the volunteers. His new name is Banjo. Banjo has warmed up to everyone in the house (he was a little shy at first, since he was taken out of an abusive home and had a very busy and stressful day). Although everyone loves him, and he feels the same, his best friend is my dog, Tobey, who is the other dog in the pictures.

We just wanted to thank you for letting us adopt such a sweet little boy, and to let you know how he is doing after a week and a half."

Shadow
"Pam,
Hi, I just wanted to give you an update on Shadow. She was one of the 4 black lab puppies adopted on May 1.

She has truly become part of the family. She is a VERY loving little girl. She is also very naughty and mischevious too. I always tell people I have 4 kids now because she is in trouble as much as the kids. But, of course, we know she is just a puppy and that is expected. She is house broken and hasn't messed in the house in over a month.

Shadow has gone on two camping trips this summer and she just loves being with us. She liked playing in the lake on our last trip to Jellystone Park in the Catskills. She loves the water, as you will see in one of the pictures where I didn't close the bathroom door completely while my daughters were taking a bath. Oops. Shadow has since had many baths and showers because if the bathroom door is not completely closed, she just comes right in and jumps in the bathtub. She is very funny.

Well, thank you for the wonderful work you do over there and I hope that you have found many more homes for many more dogs/cats since our lucky day."

Sincerely,
Evamarie

  Abby
"Hi Doreen,

I wanted to give you a long overdue update on Applebee whom we re-named Abigail ("Abby").

Abby is a delight and in perfect health. We took her to the vet soon after we got her home and got her spayed. She is very playful and affectionate although we're trying to break her habit of giving little 'love bites' on our arms. She is definitely high-energy but is also just as content to sit with us on the couch when we're watching TV. We think it's hilarious when we're watching Animal Planet and she keeps searching for the dogs behind the TV! Before even meeting Abby, the cats sensed a new presence and a new scent and puffed up tails were common. They were eventually introduced through a gate. We still keep them separated since Abby still gets a little too excited, but now the cats come right up to the gate looking for her.

Abby is a delight and we're so thankful that we found her. Here's one of our favorite pictures after she first came home.

Thank you again for helping Abby become part of our family!"

  Chow Mein
"Hello everyone! I know it has been quite a while since we took Chow Mein (renamed Cosmo) home with us, and I promised I'd write. We've had Cosmo with us since January 2005, and cannot imagine life without him.
He very quickly made himself part of the family (which includes 2 cats!). Cosmo is such a sweet, well behaved,fun-loving dog, I still can't imagine why anyone would have abandoned him. Hel loves to give kisses, and wrestle on the floor, and keeps a very close eye on the neighborhood.

In April, we moved from our apartment into a house with a big, fenced in back yard. Cosmo loves tearing around the yard, and his favorite outside toy is a metal dog dish that he throws around, barks at, and chases by himself! We have yet to get the perfect picture of him doing that, but as soon as we do, we'll send it. It's amazing! Everyone who comes into our home is immediately in love with Cos, and we always tell them just where and how Cosmo came into our lives. Thanks to all of you, and keep up the wonderful work that you do. I've enclosed a few pics of Cosmo lounging at home!"

Thanks again to all of you,
Colleen S.

  Short Stop
"Here are some pictures of Shorty, who just recently celebrated his first birthday. As you can see, he has grown into a very handsome boy. He is such a loveable little guy and just a joy to have around. We are truly blessed to have found him and can not imagine what life would be like without him. There are also a few pictures with his sister, Nera, whom he adores. They have such a great time together, chasing each other and wrestling around.

I can't thank you and JAC enough for saving Shorty's life!! You should all be commended for the tireless effort that you put into saving animals lives. Thank you again!"

  Maggie
"To all at JAC who work so hard and are so dedicated to the pets that we are so fortunate to adopt.

Maggie, a.k.a. Maxi, entered our lives on Sept 20, 2005. After the loss of our Tucker in Aug., we and our Newf Ernie were suffering a great loss and needed to replace that void. We were the lucky ones in meeting with Maggie and just about knew from that meeting with her that she would fit into our lives. I must admit that in first searching for another dog, in my distraught state I had been looking for a replica of Tucker. When I went to Petfinder and saw all the pages and pages of homeless animals, I realized that 10 minutes from our home was a shelter that we were quite familiar with. And so it began. The minute we went to see Maggie in her crate her tail would not stop wagging. We knew we had to take her and make a better life that she had before coming to JAC.

There is not a day that she doesn’t make us laugh and to watch her in her shy and somewhat unsure way becoming friends with Ernie. We look forward to having her enjoy all the things she probably missed in her life. We thank the JAC for being here and we thank you Maggie for choosing us. With each ending comes a new beginning and Maggie is just starting hers. Quite a good feeling to know that one dog will no longer be on one of those pages."

Sincerely, Michael, Carol & Ernie

  Dixie
Steve, the following is a letter to Dixie (the mother dog I am fostering) from one of her babies (also named Dixie) that was adopted along with a couple of pictures. --Cathy

"Dear Mommy,

I just wanted to send you a quick note to let you know that I am doing great. I want to thank Aunt Cathy for finding such a nice family who loves me so much.

My first day was a little scary with leaving you and Aunt Cathy and the long car ride, but once I saw my new home I was glad a came here. I love the long grass. I like to play army and crawl around in it dragging my back legs (it tickles my belly).

I have a lot of new toys to play with. I think my two favorites are my chew bones and a fluffy pink squeak bone. My daddy got me a new red harness to wear, I am not so sure I like it but I am getting used to it.

I am doing real well with the house training. I make it outside most of the time, but I am still working on it. My diarrhea is all gone and I eat everything my new daddy gives me.

My first night sleeping in my new crate was a little scary. I got up a couple of times during the night, but my new daddy was right there next to me. The next night I did real well. Daddy and I went to bed around 10:30 and I didn't get up until 5:15.

My new brother and Sister are fun too; I like it when they lay down on the ground so I can climb on their head. They know I am just playing and are careful to not get scared. Say hello to my brothers and sisters and I hope they find homes as nice as this one."

Love,
Dixie

  Hercules, Samson, Molly, JC, Pita...(!)
Longtime and devoted JAC volunteers Debbie and Steve have adopted many JAC dogs and cats. Debbie says, "You can never have just one dog. And it is possible to offer more than one adoptive dog a happy ending...No matter how bad the day is, you'll come home, and they'll do something stupid that will make you forget about the day. That's what it is...They have so much to offer...They may have their problems, their mood swings...but a BBQ is not complete without begging!" Steve says, "They're good as gold...They're hilarious!"

Sugar
Sugar is very happy in her new home. She has calmed down somewhat, she's stopped mouthing, and she no longer runs in circles. See what a good home can do! This lovely lady has put on a few pounds, and they look great on her! Her owner, Bob, of New Jersey, says that Sugar is a good dog! Good luck to our sweet girl Sugar and her kind new owner!

  Abbott and Costello
"Dear JAC,

My best friend, Wendy, and I each adopted a kitten from you in September, 2004. Our kittens were gray and white, brothers from the same litter and about 7 weeks old. We named them Abbott and Costello.

Today, our babies are 9 months old, and starting to settle down a little bit from their kittenish ways. They are both such wonderful companions - vocal, sweet, friendly and clever. And best of all, they adore each other and play all day long when they get to visit with each other. Thanks again!"

  Abby
"Dear Ruth Perlmutter,

I adopted little Abby in June of 1999. Sorting through letters the other day I found a note from you where you thank me for giving Abby a home to call her own. I thought that I would write you a little note back to let you know that she is doing fantastic. We moved to Copenhagen, Denmark in June of 2001, that's where I am from originally and Abby is loving the European laid back attitude to dogs.

She took the flight and the move very well and loves being spoiled by my parents. It's hard to believe but she has actually grown to care a great deal about my boyfriend's loving labrador Chester. Abby didn't like sharing the attention at first, but the two have grown to appreciate each other's company in many ways :) Abby makes a mess when she eats and Chester cleans up after her!

She enjoys her window seat in our apartment and keeps track of all the neighborhoods dogs walking by. I, of course could not imagine living without my loyal, super smart, loving companion with the quirky personality. We've been together for almost 6 years through thick and thin."

Warm regards,

Tina a.k.a. Fionna
On 3/6/05 we adopted Tina from your agency. Her name now is Fionna. She has learned HUGS KISSES and how to do stairs. She was at the Vet and had a excellent check up. She loves her comforter and in addition she has a 6 month old baby brother (who came to us 1 wk. after her) (Finneghan) to tend with and they love each other. They run and play every day. Getting up at 5-6 every morning isn't as bad as I thought ha ha ha....

Fionna is believed to be an English Coonhound -maybe a mix with something according to research. She has adapted very very well here with us and we are so glad we had the chance to give her the true home she deserves.

We got them a BIG Bunny for Easter as you can see in the second picture.

Thank you so much for TINA aka Fionna. Please let all know she is doing just fine!

Allie a.k.a. Lucky
"Hi Pam and Everyone at JAC,

We apologize for the delay in getting this to you. We adopted "Allie" from JAC in November 2003. We kept her name as Allie but added a middle name, Lucky. We chose the name Lucky because we are so grateful and fortunate to have her in our lives, as well as her luck at having been rescued by you, and brought into our family.

The name "Lucky" turned out to be quite appropriate. 2 weeks after we adopted Allie, we found out we were pregnant with twins. Jake and Remi were born on 7/14/2004. Allie has been a great big sister since day one. She loves her babies more than anything- always kissing them, entertaining them by chasing her tail or playing with her toys and protecting them when she hears unusual noises.

Allie has settled into her life very nicely. When she first came to live with us in NYC, she was a little rattled by all the loud and strange city noises. But she learned to adapt pretty quickly, and feels very secure in her home. While she started out sweet but a bit shy, she has really come out of her shell, and is quite the extrovert. She loves people and other dogs, and rare is the person who meets her now that doesn't instantly fall in love with her.

She has a very active social life here in the Big Apple. We live two blocks from a dog park where she is very popular and has her own crew of friends. We recently celebrated her 1 year birthday with us at the dog run with all her friends, as well as her brother and sister.

We can't thank you enough for bringing this wonderful dog into our lives. Literally, not a single day goes by without us remarking to each other how fortunate we are to have found her. She changed our lives the very minute she entered it."

Baby Bear
"Dear friends,

I am thrilled to announce the arrival of my new dog, Oso Bear Meyer! He is seven years old and was adopted from a family in Short Hills, with the very kind assistance of Jersey Animal Coalition (JAC)...I have been in contact with a very nice woman from JAC since January 14. We exchanged several messages back and forth and all my questions about Bear were answered satisfactorily and I decided to meet him as soon as his owners came back from an extended business trip/vacation in India. I met Bear on Saturday and was instantly in love! I had two pages of questions prepared to ask the couple who had to give him up due to an elderly parent having to move in with them. The husband was heart-broken to have to give him up.

Bear came home with me on Saturday and is settling nicely into his new home. We have had nice walks several times a day and I don't know who is more worn out, me or Bear! After our last walk last night from 10 to 10:30, he went right to bed in his giant LL Bean dog bed (kindly given to me by his former owner) and slept all the way through to 7 this morning! We went for two walks this morning before I left for work.

Bear is calm, friendly, lovable, gentle, well-behaved and well-mannered. I look forward to taking care of him and sharing my life with him for as long as possible! I think we'll be a great team!

-------------UPDATE-------------

...Just a quick note to let you know that Bear is doing great! He's such a wonderful dog. His temperament is so good. He's as calm as a dog could possibly be and as loving a dog as I have ever known. He really is a kisser. His manners, too, are the best I've ever come across in a dog. He must really have taken to his obedience training too. He does the heal command like a champ! I may enroll us in the Canine Good Citizen training series at Petco. If he does well with that, I might try to register him as a therapy dog. I've dreamed of doing that for years and was hoping to choose a dog with the right temperament, but when I saw that Bear was already seven, I figured I'd put off that dream until the next dog. You never know, he might really enjoy having a job!

He gets incredibly excited when I ask him if he wants to go for a walk and he's quickly making friends and fans in his new community.

He does seem a little depressed when I am getting ready for work and clearly does not like to be alone. His only bad behavior is that he just cannot stay out of the garbage! I've finally given up and have been locking the garbage can in a bathroom when I leave so he cannot get to it!"

Wishbone a.k.a. Diesel
"Hi,
We just wanted to let you know that Diesel is doing fine for the first day here. We gave him a bath which brought out his real beauty and after getting to know "Sugar", our Pit mix, he relaxed on the couch while we watched the super bowl. He is a great dog and we want you to know that he is very happy and comfortable in his new home. I will update you in a few days and will get a picture to you with Diesel and Sugar together. We thank you and I'm quite sure that Diesel thanks you too...

...Diesel slept till 5am in his crate next to us till I had to get up for a nature call, so I let him out too and then he slept with us in bed till 7. He follows me wherever I go and I love it. I can't believe what a great dog he is. I'll be in touch soon."

Miles
"Hi Ruth:
Wanted to give you an update on Miles' first day with us. He laid in the backseat for the whole trip to Yardley sucking on the comforter we put down on the back seat. We fed him twice yesterday (12:30 and 6:30) and he eats as if there is no tomorrow. Walked him last night and he was fine, leaving his mark all over the neighborhood. Plan to walk him in the a.m. and p.m. and do his training in the a.m. after his walk. Marianna worked with him today and obeys all his commands wonderfully. We will pick up a 30-foot leash and take him to a nearby softball field that is enclosed by fences and gates on Saturday and see how he does. He's still getting adjusted to sounds - train whistle nearby, garage door opening, flags flapping in the wind, etc. He didn't sleep at all yesterday - which surprised me - until we went to bed around 11 p.m. We let him have the run of the downstairs and he was fine. Took away the baby gate to the upstairs and after he checked out all the bedrooms, he came down. He still doesn't know all the rooms in the house and often goes looking for a family member if he does see him or her. After he locates us, he goes back to his spot on the couch Guess he's keeping tabs on the entire pack.

We put the dog crate in our bedroom with a comforter. He walked in and out, checking it out, but decided to sleep on the bed with us. He moved around a couple times during the night, but slept through the night. A neighbor of ours stopped by late yesterday afternoon to drop off a package. Miles sniffed her and then laid down on command while the neighbor sat in a chair and talked with us for 10-15 minutes. Did the same thing with him when we ate dinner - down and stay - and fed him immediately after we ate. We did have to take the comforter away from him for a time when he began chewing it, but later on we brought it back out because he likes to wrap himself in it and he didn't chew it. My daughter bought him a large animal bone that he has been working on endlessly. Plan to pick up a large Kong ball for him to play with and to put peanut butter and/or apple slices to keep him occupied.

My wife had to go out for about an hour each two times today and Miles went into the crate without hesitation, so that was a relief (and something we couldn't get our old dog to do). Miles likes to keep his nose close to the counter, so we have to tell him no when he does. He also has a tendency to back his butt onto the couch or on our lap and keep his front legs on the ground. Don't know if that's a dominance thing or he just wants to get rubbed, but plan to ask Harry that when he comes Sunday. I'll send directions to you later this week to give to Harry. I'll update you on Miles at that time, as well and take some digital photos and send them along. It was nice to meet you yesterday. Thanks for everything you've done to bring Miles to us."

Dakota
"My husband and I are so thrilled to have little Dakota in our lives. Thanks to a wonderful foster mom, we are now able to call her ours. Dakota is playful and loves to go running on the beach. She is so smart and ready for puppy kindergarten soon. Our cat, Milo, and her have become long lost buddies and it's the cutest thing to watch. She also loves other dogs and mostly loves to cuddle with people. Thank you to your wonderful team and have a great New Year! "

Freddy
"We adopted Freddy (formerly Rascal) in July of 2004. Being seniors, we didn't have a dog with Freddy's energy in mind. But at the July adoption day, he stole our hearts. We had our first dog for 17 years, and after his passing, we never thought we'd be able to own another dog. But after 5 years, we changed out minds and adopted Freddy.

We moved from New Jersey to St. Louis 9 years ago, so the day we picked Freddy up at JAC, we put him in the back seat of our car, and drove him 1,000 miles to his new home. He behaved perfectly the entire trip.

Despite his young age (1 year in October 2004) and our old age, it is a wonderful match. He surely loves to play, but he also knows when it's time to settle down and take a nap or watch TV (literally, he watches TV!!).

He loves his walks and rides in the car. He also enjoys the dog park where he plays with all the other dogs, and playing with our grandchildren and other neighborhood kids.

He is the perfect addition to the family, and we are thankful to JAC for bringing us together. Thanks, JAC."

Kel
"Just wanted to say hello and let you all know that Kel has settled in just fine! We decided that after 8 years of being called one name, we would keep her name as Kel (the kids call her "Kelly-Belly").

She is a wonderful addition to our family. We love having her around, our kids just love her and it's obvious she loves them! Our 2 cats are now getting along fine with her. Kel has helped in many ways to mend our feelings of loss from our last dog. Thank you again for saving such a sweet girl. I've sent a few pictures..."

Milo
"Today is our three month anniversary - Milo came home to me three months ago, scared, skinny, depressed, anxious, confused, and in need of attention, love and care.

We spent the summer getting to know each other, with me trying valiantly to show him, in deed and devotion, that this was his home, and he needn't worry that he was going to be abandoned again. And I know that he desperately wanted to please me; that's all dogs live for. It took some time for me to understand that his making a mess in the house wasn't "spiteful" or deliberate. I just needed to understand why he was doing it and how to train him that it's not OK. A firm "no" is a million times better than a swat, or a spell down in the basement by himself, or a can shaken at him. Dogs don't understand that.

After some frustration, but always infused with love and a desire to figure it out, we've come to today, Sept. 19. Milo has shown a personality filled with playful fun, humor, and complete and absolute sweetness. He is the Mayor of Millburn, as his many admirers call him. So many people stop me on my walks with him that I am always left wondering how I became so blessed to get him, and how he could have been passed up at 7 or 8 Adoption Days. I don't think about that often; I do think, every day that I wake up and his ears are plastered back behind his cute head and his tail is moving from side to side like a metronome, so happy to see me awake, knowing that he's going to get a long walk outside with fresh air, and come home to biscuits, that he and I are on the same side of lucky.

My thanks to you - and here is Milo, finally at his home."

Howie
"Sorry this took so long! Our happy ending has taken a while to compose. Our "Howie" became very sick shortly after we got him home. But now he is fit as a fiddle and a fine young lad to boot.

He has been easy to train and is so amusing - he loves his walks and rides in the car, but most of all, he loves to kiss the kitty - just before he chases him all over the house! Howie is somewhat timid with strangers, but we are working on that.

This picture is from our first days at home, but he is close to 65 lbs. now!

I would love to be in touch with any of his littermates "parents" if they are interested. (I see Beau has recently been re-adopted) to compare notes.

Thanks for letting Howie share our lives."

Cleo
"Cleo is a lovely and smart cat. When driving home, she was trying to get out of the cardboard box to look at the road, and once inside, immediately started to explore her surroundings. She also is a clean cat, as she started using her litterbox right away.

All my roomates are happy to welcome a new friend, and Cleo has explored each room in turn and made herself comfortable at home. Life in a cage has not affected her, as she often looks for affection, and follows me all around the house.

Cleo is now learning new tricks, such as opening the sliding doors of my room by herself. It took her a little while to become friends with my girlfriend, but Cleo now likes her, especially since it is my girlfriend who feeds her when she is here.

Cleo likes to spend her days looking by the window, and sleeping on the warm CD player. It is such a pleasure to come back home in the evening and be greeted at the door by this little kitty."

Beau
"Beau is doing great. He got his stitches out today. He did not like having the collar/cone on him (from being neutered). He is a happy friendly puppy and is making fast friends with all the neighbors- 2-legged & 4-legged. He has gone to Doggy Day Camp during the week & is having a blast running around with all the other dogs all day. We are starting obedience training the week after next. He is so smart I'm sure he'll catch on quick. He is very treat/food motivated. I am so glad he got to come home with me. Thanks again for your help!"

Dakota
"Just to let you know "Dakota" is adorable and thriving and very loved. Other dog Kentucky has been superb! Thanks so much and we will run into you at a volunteering day soon!

Here is a photo of Dakota with her new owner Margaux. Everyone loves Dakota, even our other dog Kentucky, who can be a little feisty with other dogs."

Thanks!

Rocky
"In approximately September, 1990, we brought Rocky home from an adopt-a-pet day which you held in Maplewood. He was about six weeks old at the time. He was an absolutely fantastic pet and a wonderful companion, whom I had to let go last month just passed his 13th birthday, when it was discovered he had liver cancer. I really do not know how much you keep track of the dogs that you placed in homes, but I wanted to thank you for the chance to grow old with my little buddy. I am enclosing a copy of a picture of him, should you keep a file of same.

With my wife now gone (having passed four years ago, also from cancer) I would like to wait until Spring before I attempt to train another puppy. I would like your help in finding one, as we always, without a doubt, preferred "mutts" to pedigrees. They just always seem to be nicer dogs. I would appreciate hearing from you as to the possibility of you helping me find another "best friend."

Enclosed, please find my yearly donation and my wishes for a happy and healthy Holiday Season."

* * * *

"I just wanted to thank you for your kind words in your March 4 letter to me concerning the passing of my dog, Rocky. I had to search high and low for a picture of Rocky that included people (had a million of him alone) and finally came across the one attached of my late wife Cindy, Rocky and I. Hopefully it meets with your needs.

You certainly have my permission to include Rocky's story in your "Happy Endings". He was a good friend up until the end and deserves to be "immortalized". Please do me a favor and "e" me when something is posted as my sons are anxious to check out your site.

On a happier note, I got another puppy from the JAC two weeks ago (Rachel) who is a total sweetheart and has already "brightened up our lives".

Anyway, thanks in advance for your hard work and I look forward to seeing your end product."

Ben
"We adopted Ben this Border Collie Mix on Nov 2, 2003. He is a wonderful dog. He is so smart and so loving. Thank you so much for rescuing him.

He has fit right into his new home. He herds the three cats as if they were sheep. He thinks his "Big brother" My oldest son Arthur (16) is another puppy to romp on the floor with. He has started protecting his yard and his house, from the garbage man, the mail man and any other strangers.

I've hired a trainer to help train him correctly. She raises border collies for agility and sheep herding, and she said that he is a great dog. We love him to pieces!!
He is a real find! Thank you again!!"

Thor
"Lewis and I wanted you to know how very happy we are to welcome Thor into our home. He has been so happy and playful. I expected Thor to show a little stress on his first day, but it was uneventful. He has yet to show any changes in personality. He is smiling and loves to sleep with us every night. We tried to encourage Thor to sleep in his bed, but he doesn't want to, so there's three in our bed every night. Glad we have a King size bed!

As you can see we took Thor to the groomer the very next day. He is so adorable with his Puppy-cut. Thor is now an official member of our family. Honestly, Cathy, anytime that you would like to see Thor, just let Lewis and I know and we will make every effort to get him to you for a visit.

Thanks for bring Thor into our lives. He makes Lewis, Sienna and me very happy!"

Floyd
"I adopted this little boy from JAC on October 4, 2002. Floyd has his moments, but is the most affectionate and fun companion I could have hoped for. My brother Mike kept trying to steal him, and finally adopted one of his own. And my mom--who warned me that she hates chihuahuas and if I adopted one we would be unwelcome at her house--has found a new best friend. Here they are in their favorite play area in her kitchen."

Murray
JAC volunteer Mary rescued Murray from behind a restaurant, where he had been surviving by rummaging through garbage cans for food. He was emaciated, suffering from an injured leg, and experiencing seizures. Mary took him to an emergency clinic, where his injuries were treated, and then brought him to JAC.

Murray's new owner writes:
"We loved Murray from day one. A real laid-back boy who only wants to be loved. Evan (pictured right) came along, and Murray accepted him with open paws.

As soon as Murray walks into a room, Evan smiles and laughs. Murray lets Evan climb all over him, pull his fur, and squeeze his eyeballs, no joke. It's as if Murray understands this is a precious infant and -- to make him happy -- sit back and enjoy the attention, even if it means minus some fur that gets pulled out by little strong fingers."

Mya, T.J., and Lefty
"Here is the picture of me, Kate and the 'kids,' from left to right, Mya, T.J. (male), and Lefty (female). They are all JAC cats. T.J. and Lefty are brother and sister. They are spoiled rotten, but don't take advantage of it too often.

They are only the beginning of our animal family, but they are such a wonderful bunch. Each has their own personality. T.J. is the king of the house, and the welcoming committee. He takes it upon himself to be the first to welcome any visitors and make himself at home on their lap. Lefty is quiet and confident. We call her "The Queen". She does as she pleases and lets you know when she wants some affection. Mya, on the other hand, ALWAYS wants affection. Being younger than the other two, she is very active and often harrasses T.J. until he gives in and plays with her. She is always ready for action. She is adorable, AND SHE KNOWS IT!! She is like the girl who uses her looks to get whatever she wants.

As you can probably tell, we love all three very much, and we could not ask for a better start to a family!! Thanks to J.A.C.!!!"

Jasmin
"Attached are a few photos with us in her new home. When we met Jasmin with Kathy on September 4th she came to us but was shy. On September 5th we adopted her. She wasn't crate trained, was beginning to let you know when whe needed to go out.

Now, she is crate trained, housebroken and lots of fun. She has her routine and loves her chew bones, toys, and her home.

We are so happy with her and love her so much, we couldn't imagine her not with us. Thank you and enjoy the photos."

Baby a.k.a. Ari Baby
Baby, now renamed "Ari Baby," lived with JAC for over two years, and he became one of our dearest, most-loved dogs. Despite long periods of confinement, previous owner abuse (his ears had been butchered), and chronic allergic rashes, he displayed the resilience, forgiveness, and patience of a Saint as he waited for his happy ending.

His new owner writes:
"I enclose some photos of the little gentleman. Sorry it took so long - I'm not much of a shutterbug. Ari Baby is doing well indeed. He's soft + shiny + full of happiness.

What a well-behaved doll-baby! He loves his walks, his toys, and time spent lounging on the sofa in the evenings watching Law + Order. He loves having his belly petted + having his cute little face kissed.

It took some months but his G.I. issues have straightened out. He still has some anxiety but I keep his environment as peaceful + quiet as possible. Long walks + good food has helped. The allergies/skin flares up now + then but is under control.

Thank you for doing your rescue work and for making it possible for me to have this most joyful presence in my life + home. I cannot imagine living without him!"

Chunk a.k.a. Chunk-a-lunk
"We're writing to give you an update on Chunk, the beautiful border collie-mish-mash of a pup we were so lucky to adopt almost two months ago. We could not be happier with our Chunk-a-lunk. He is an angel of a puppy.

He has adjusted quite well to New York City living, and has a bunch of doggy friends at the dog run at the Museum of Natural History, whom he plays with every day. The owner of his labradoodle friend, Mel, told us that she thought Chunk was the best natured dog in the run! Must have something to do with you JAC folk.

Of course, his stay with the JAC made him a jersey-pup at heart, and he loves visiting his grandparents in Millburn where he exhausts himself chasing squirrels, chipmunks, and deer. Chunk has brought so much joy into our lives, it's hard to remember life without him.

Attached are some pics, one portrait on his seat on the couch, one of his favorite sleeping position (legs against the wall), and one with Xena, his cousin, who was adopted via petfinder.org at the same time. We can't thank you enough."

Isadora a.k.a. Izzy
This beauty was abandoned at a vet's front door. We noticed that she liked to twirl on her hind legs, so we named her after Isadora Duncan. Now with a new adoring owner, "Izzy" has traded in her dancing shoes for a cuddly lap.

Her owner writes:
"I have attached a picture of 'Izzy,' the 62 lb. lap dog, helping me take a study break. She is doing great, but is looking forward to the cooler weather."

Clifford a.k.a. Red
Clifford was an extra-large adult dog who joined JAC while struggling with health and personality issues. His adoption to an adoring owner truly exemplifies the notion that "there's a top for every pot."

Clifford's new name is "Red," and he lives on a farm in a rural area. His owner writes:
"The boy has settled in. He's living with four cats, happy, enjoys dog parties, and is mostly now ignoring strangers. We did good, and thank you and all of the folks there for their faith in him."

See a montage of Clifford's adoption!

Annie
Annie was adopted last year by a lovely woman who lives at a nearby retirement community. But because Annie's owner recently became hospitalized, Marilyn, an acquaintance of hers at the community offered to adopt this shy but heartwarming feline. JAC volunteers recently helped move Annie to Marilyn's apartment.

Once Annie was settled in, getting acquainted with the logistics of Marilyn's apartment (including the new location of her litterbox!), Marilyn told us:
"I feel somewhat relieved that we've gotten her into the house and that you people are here, and I'm grateful for it. And I'm sure she's going to be fine...Hello, Annie!"

And thus began Annie's and Marilyn's new chapter together.

Precious
"I've attached 2 photos above. One to show you how Precious has already found the bay window that she can sprawl out on, or watch all the birds, squirrels and chipmunks in the back yard. (We've already moved the plant from the window just in case, because we know that house plants can be dangerous for pets). The other photo shows you how my mom has already gotten Precious up on her lap for a combing.

I don't have a picture of it yet but Precious has even gotten up on the sofa in my Dad's lap, and made him very happy allowing him to pat her. Both my parents think she's beautiful, and I know they will all bring joy to each other. Hope you like the photos and I'll keep you posted from time to time with additional photos. Thank you again."

Pearl
"We just thought we would let you know that our beloved Pearl passed away during the night. I don't know if you remember her, you guys knew her as 'Angel' 12-1/2 years ago. We just wanted to thank you for investing so much time in Pearl to make her adoptable so long ago. She was one of, if not the best dog we ever had.

She loved people, kids and was always super friendly, giving kisses all over to anyone who petted her. For one year about 10 years ago, she was even a pet therapy dog. Once a week, I would take her to a nursing home where she made alot of people smile.

She had a rough beginning before you guys took her in and she had a wonderful life with us. She went on lots of vacations, always went for rides in the car, got lots of love and attention and tons of treats. We loved her very much and will miss her terribly. The only good thing out of this is that another dog from a shelter will get a good home with us, I think Pearl could appreciate that."

Frosty

It's never easy for an animal to adjust to life in a cage, and it must be doubly hard when that life is forced upon him or her once again after an extended adoption period. As rescuers, we're overwhelmed with bittersweetness when one of our animals is returned. But as difficult as it is for us, we can only imagine how the animal must be sorting through the loss of his pack, familiar surroundings, and routine.

Frosty is a pitbull that was adopted by a rock musician who returned him a year later because of his busy schedule. This exhuberant and strikingly beautiful Amstaff mix had difficulty adjusting to being confined once again, and he often bloodied himself scaling the runs and thrashing his tail against the sides of his kennel.

Today Frosty lives with his new owner, Chad, a builder who has other dogs and a large property for them to play on. Faithful as only an Amstaff can be, he bears the new name Mr. McGoo, and he sits by Chad in his truck each day as they travel from job to job. The rockstar life way behind him, today McGoo is living his own glamorous life in the fast lane!

September, 2004 Update
McGoo is shown here wearing Armondo Barkmani. He's decked for his role as the ring bearer at Chad's wedding, but he typically prefers more casual attire.

Spirit
Our thanks to wildlife rehabilitator and friend of JAC, Judith, who has taken another baby Sparrow under her wing. Spirit fell from his nest and was nearly swept down a storm drain before being rescued by a JAC volunteer.

Judith will now hand feed Spirit for the the next two weeks--around the clock--until he (or she) is ready to be released back into the wilds of Livingston, NJ. and beyond. JAC is lucky to know this dedicated animal lover!

Matches
"Hello Family and Friends. On Monday morning when I checked my E-mail at my office computer at Essex County College, I found a letter that was forwarded from a dear friend, Claudette. Claudette knew of the recent loss of my beloved Chance and Frisky, and how lonely Liberty was. Claudette had received a letter from a woman who was looking for a home for her late mother's dog. The letter told of a dog named 'Matches' who since late December had been living alone, and whose only contact with a person was when he was fed.

As I read the letter, tears fell from my eyes. I knew too well how the dog felt from seeing Liberty so sad, not understanding either why her companions were no longer around. After reading the letter I immediately contacted Wincey and told her of my loss and my dog's loneliness. I asked her could Liberty and I please meet "Matches" and see if he could join our family.

That afternoon at 4:30,Wincey, her son and "Matches" came to my home. We watched Liberty and Matches begin to get to know each other. Both dogs took to each other right away, and Matches and I began to bond. Wincey, her son and I were so overjoyed and so thankful to God that he brought us together. I also was told how Matches was at the pet adoption site here in Maplewood on Sunday afternoon. I had planned on going but didn't because I was a little tired when I got home from church.

I want to thank you all for your letters and keeping Liberty and I in your prayers when you learned of the passing of Chance and Frisky. For the last 3 weeks I prayed that God would send me another companion when the time was right. Not only did he answer my prayers, he also answered Wincey's prayers for Matches. My friend Ron met Matches on Tuesday night and he too was thrilled! It was great watching Ron, Liberty and Matches running in the yard as he had done with Frisky, Chance and Liberty."

With deepest appreciation,
Liberty and Ricky

Zeus
"Happy New Year to you and the staff, and any animals waiting for a new home. I thought I would send you a couple of pictures of Zeus, since it was his birthday yesterday and he is celebrating a full year here with us in Seneca Castle.

peter and emily He has been simply wonderful. Everyone he meets comments on what a nice dog he is, and he has even changed some people's opinions about pitbulls and their stereotyped ferocity and viciousness. He has travelled with me to 14 different states so far and left his mark on every single one.

Once again, thank you and the staff for rescuing and caring for the homeless and abandoned pits. I wish I could adopt more of the sheltered pits but until I finish school my hands are tied. When I finish though, look out, I'll be looking for a couple more. Take care."

Spud
Spud and family Three cheers to the wonderful folks at South Orange Animal Hospital, who were instrumental in Spud's happy ending. Although this puppy had been abandoned at the Hospital with a broken leg, his joyful spirit remained undiminished. Soon everyone who met him became determined to give him a new and better life.

Because the hospital staff couldn't treat Spud or place him without legal ownership, they prepared the necessary paperwork and visited the owners on several occasions for their signatures. Then, once Spud got back on all four of his feet, the staff posted signs and worked with JAC's Catherine Delett to prepare Spud's page. Efforts paid off, because Spud soon found his new family, Emily and Connor (see picture). These days Spud is very mischevious and happy at his new home. He likes to run between the shower curtain and liner when someone's showering, and eventually he jumps in! He's really a clown, and his new owners love him.

Spud's happy ending video was adapted for use as a television Public Service Announcement. Emily
"This note is LONG overdue. Four years ago I was working with someone who did volunteer work at Jersey Animal Coalition. She knew I was a dog lover because I mentioned it many times -- even though I had not had a dog in many years. She encouraged me to come to an adoption day that was coming up within a few weeks. I agreed to go 'just to look.' Well, you know the rest. I found 'Emily.' They told me they found her walking the streets of NYC without a collar. She was a 6-month old Chocolate Lab-Pointer mix.

peter and emilyI was unsure, at first, if I could handle the responsibility. Being single and working all day may not be fair to the dog. The people at Jersey Animal Coalition said I could 'foster' Emily for 30-days. If it did not work out - I could return her. Well, 30 days turned into 60 - and 60 turned into 90.......you know the rest. Four years later she is sitting on the floor next to me as I type this letter -- chewing on her favorite rubber bone.

I have not mentioned the most important thing of all. When I adopted Emily, my mother had just tuned 80. Like many people her age, she was living alone, had her share of medical problems, was lonely and at times depressed. Even though I was the one who wanted this dog, in the back of my mind I thought 'this might help Mom.' Well, I was right. Every morning, on my way to catch the New York train, I drop Emily off at my mother's house. It has changed her life. This dog means more to her than anything. She just loves it. A few weeks ago she said something remarkable: 'Emily is an angel.' I asked what she meant. She said 'she is a gift from God.'"

Leroy
leroy and thelmaIn the November 3, 2002 issue of Sunday Star Ledger, Joan Lowell Smith published a letter she'd received from Thelma Riemer, the happy new owner of a JAC dog named Leroy. Leroy is a beautiful Bichon who has "done wonders" for Thelma, a senior citizen who lives in our area. Read her letter.

Mellow
One of our volunteers was walking along a street and saw what appeared to be a motionless pile of somethng grey and fluffy. As she approached it, she realized it was a cat- a big, beautiful pearl grey Persian! His fur was badly matted and he was very upset. It turned out that he had every reason to be so.

mellow the persianWhen she rushed him to us, with our vet, we discovered that he had only one eye and that the other was clouded over with a cataract. His ears were badly scarred from previous infections. He appeared to be a very old cat. As if this weren't enough, he was declawed! The person who had abandoned him in this sorry state called the Animal Control Officer and told him the cat was no longer wanted, and we could do anything we wanted with him. Of course, no name was left.

Once he was examined and received his shots, we realized he was totally blind. He would try desperately to "claw" his way out of the wrong side of his cage. He only stopped crying when we held and stroked him - only then did he seem content. We named him Mellow.

One day a call came in from a woman in Maryland. She had seen him on our webpage, was touched by his story and wanted to see him. It was a match made in Heaven. Mellow turned out to be only 7 or 8 years old. He had no trouble in locating and using his litter pan. He is now living in the lap of luxury (his new mistress's lap!), and even has a special little orthodpedic bed to use when he chooses.

The only sad part of this story is that until this time, he had to live a life of pain and neglect. But now that he is being showered with the love and care he never knew, he is making up for lost time! If ever there was a Happy Ending to Mellow's Sad Beginning, this was it!

Enjoy these Holiday Greetings from Mellow's Owner
"Hope your holidays were as great as mine. It's now a New Year and each one goes by faster and faster. Mel went to visit Santa this year and I'm sending you the pictures. I hope they don't take too long to download onto your computer. I'm sending 5 pictures, let me know if you have problems opening any of them. My favorite is Mel riding in the car. He's such a joy to have and has brought so much happiness. Say Hello to Ruth for me and wishes to you all for a great New Year."

Scout
scout and his new brother Scout was abandoned as a mere baby - only 5 months old - and had only days to live when our volunteers rescued him. He was just a bag of bones but his sweet and loving personality shone through. Although he was clearly traumatized by his sad life so far - he was terrified of cars and seemed to never have been inside a house - he somehow didn't lose his trusting nature.

Lucky Scout, his story ends happily! His serious face and cuddley nature captured the heart of his adoptors. His new family has given him more love than he could have ever hoped for, along with a soft bed, a "big brother", and a fenced in yard. Does life get any better?

Mack
mack's picture Mack came to the JAC as a stray. He was a skinny, malnourished dog, probably due to a rough life on the streets, where he, most likely, had to fight for every meal. His coat was dull from too many nights spent in alley-ways, as well as from an obviously poor diet. This sad physical state for such a young dog was clearly unbefitting to both his German Shepherd Dog and Rottweiller ancestry and needed immediate redress.

But, this sad beginning has a happy ending! Since his fostering (and subsequent adoption) Mack has been fed a diet of green, leafy vegetables, organic chicken and beef, vitamin supplements (and the occasional hot dog. Shhhh, don't tell mommy!). His coat glistens, eyes shine and his frame is beginning to fill out with muscle mass.

Because his new brother's name is Max, Mack was renamed Murphy. Murphy loves his new home, enclosed back yard and, especially, his new brother, Max. Murphy and Max play together every day and then sleep for hours on end. Truly a happy ending for such a wonderful dog!

Fella
As nighttime approached and horns blared, an exhausted bedraggled dog limped slowly down the center of the highway. Dragging a heavy chain and padlock that were heavier than he was, the shepherd mix was clearly in pain.

fella's picture A kindhearted man rescued the dazed animal and brought him to Jersey Animal Coalition. Volunteers there named him “Fella”, and used a special metal cutter to remove the chain from his bruised neck. Fella was hesitant to trust anyone, and offered no response to the attention heaped upon him.

After months of loving care, JAC volunteers were finally rewarded with a kiss and a wagging tail! Fella had finally realized that no harm would come to him ever again, and that he could love and be loved in return.

Fella didn’t know it, but luck was with him that long ago night on the highway. If his rescuer had brought him to almost any other place, he surely would have been euthanized, but Jersey Animal Coalition never gave up on him. Instead, he received all the time and understanding he needed in order to regain his spirit. Eventually, JAC helped Fella find an adopted family, and today he is a happy, healthy dog, who bears no resemblance to the sad, abandoned animal he once was.

Lucky
The minutes were ticking away before this beautiful silky young dog was to lose his life in a nearby pound. No one knows the circumstances under which he was left there. He was neutered and well behaved , with pale translucent eyes that spoke of many sorrows he had seen. A volunteer noticed him, and feeling he was special, took him home and called us. Of course we took him in and boarded him so he could be checked out, medically treated and then be adopted He was promptly named Lucky, because he certainly was!

Lucky seemed a lot older than the vet said he was, because he acted very tired and sluggish. One day a man came in and happened to see him. He said, That dog is a Border Collie! They are the smartest of all the purebreds, and if they don't work, they get very depressed!?

Well, we went to work and solved that problem very quickly! Lucky is now "Rocky", and has a real job with benefits too! He now chases the geese off the golf course at an upper scale golf club in Westchester County!

There's the famous question of "How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?" The Border collie says, "Only one, and I will bring the wiring up to code while I'm at it." Maybe that dog was our Lucky!

Sandy
A little taffy colored terrier was found by the police tied to a tree. She was flea ridden, thin and terrified. The thundering sounds of heavy traffic and the passersby who ignored her plight left her trembling and cowering under that tree. She had lost much of her fur from all the fleas that were biting her, and her ears were painfully infected.

She was brought to us, and treatment was begun right away. Once she realized that no more harm would come to her, her delightful, affectionate and beguiling personality became evident. She was the most endearing little girl we'd seen in a long time!

The short times she was let out of her small cage at the vet's we could see that this sweet, bubbling, mischievous and entertaining terrier wanted to play, but did not know how! We also learned that she did not know how to go up and down stairs! Where on earth did this angel come from? Perhaps whoever threw her away did not have smiles or a sense of humor?

During this time a delightful couple came by looking for a pedigreed purebred terrier. Often purebreds come to us, but this time we had none. So we brought out Sandy who immediately decided that these people were for her, and proceeded to beguile them! The feeling was mutual - it was love at first sight!

Each day, Sandy surprises and fascinates her new family. They are both discovering each other, and if her family had not adopted a mixed breed they wouldn't be having all this fun! After all, a mixed breed is unique. Each is one of a kind. Her family wouldn't exchange Sandy for all the purebreds in the world!

This is truly a story of a Sad Beginning and a Happy Ending! Sandy has learned to play, and has enough toys to open up her own toy store! She goes down the stairs just fine but needs a little more practice going up. She has all the love and security her little heart ever desired - and no more fleas!

Lovey
The story of "Lovey" began very sadly. This small Shepherd Mix was found wandering the streets looking for food and shelter. She was a very pretty little girl, with one brown and one blue eye. But she had one thing more... a hole in her face!

Her eye was suspended above this hole, and from it tears flowed as if she were perpetually crying. No doctor could figure out the cause of this mysterious hole that wouldn't heal. "Lovey" literally had half a face. We were advised to "put her to sleep".

We couldn't do that without knowing what this hole was, and why it wouldn't heal. With money from our Beauty Fund for Special Medical Care, we took her to a far-away specialist who found, after many tests, that she had an especially vicious infection of the bones of the skull. She was operated on and her face was sewn up.

After many weeks of treatment and repeated visits she was pronounced "cured". Lovey now not only has a beautiful new face, but a beautiful new family with whom she is living the good life in Arizona! Now, isn't that a Happy Ending?
