A Shared Dream Becomes a Reality
After nearly two decades of rescuing dogs and cats by boarding them at local veterinarians, and after a myriad of fundraising events, JAC marked the opening of its state-of-the art Animal Shelter at a July 2005
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The Shelter is a 5,400 square feet wood-framed building located in South Orange, New Jersey.
Now with a facility of our own, we have expanded the breadth and depth of our rescue efforts on every level: from increasing the number of animals we can save at a given time, to offering programs for Maplewood, South Orange, and the surrounding areas. These programs include:
- A humane education curriculum for elementary
school students and inter-generational groups;
- Spay / neuter clinic;
- Obedience training;
- Assistance to hospice patients for controlling
the fates of their pets; and
- Analysis by certified animal behaviorists
of our shelter animals.
The Shelter is maintained by a corps of devoted and generous volunteers, and a small paid staff of veterinarians, caretakers, and security and administrative personnel. Salaries are covered by JAC's operating expenses budget.

 Building Exterior
The Shelter is designed to complement its wooded surroundings. Resembling a rustic building that would house animals in a country setting, its craftsmanlike design is modest and welcoming. |
 Vestibule and Staff Rooms
The front door leads to the Vestibule. An Executive Office and Staff Room are located on either side, and adjoining windows enable the staff to observe visitors entering and exiting the Shelter. |
 Lobby
The Lobby is a spacious and inviting. Our Shelter Manager is seated at a horseshoe-shaped desk, which functions as her virtual office. The lobby walls are covered with bulletin boards for photos of available animals and coming events. |
 Sally Porte and Quarantine Room
Down the left corrider is a Sally Porte: a garage used by township Animal Control Officers for offloading their rescued animals. The Officers secure the animals in an adjacent Quarantine Room for observation. |
 Atrium
Beyond the Reception Desk is the Atrium, which is lit by a skylight designed to mimic cat's whiskers! Natural light is funneled down into the center of the building and towards the adjacent pet areas. |
 Dog Room
The Dog Room is spacious, and it's equipped with state-of-the-art bisected crates of various sizes. The crates are easy to clean and designed for maximum comfort. Each crate is adorned with toys and clean soft towels for the dogs' maximum comfort. |
 Cat Rooms
The shelter has two identical Cat Rooms. Cats may roam freely in each room, socialize with our volunteers and each another, and even watch television!
|
 Laundry Room
The Laundry Room is centrally located for the convenience of JAC's kennel staff. Our generous contributors helped us to outfit the laundry room with brand new applicances. |
 Spay
/ Neuter Clinic
We are grateful to The Onyx and Breezy Foundation, and The
Cestone Foundation for sponsoring our Spay / Neuter Clinic.
Special thanks also goes to our visiting veterinarian, Dr.
Faith Perrin, for providing her services.

 Exercise Area
Behind the Atrium are adjoining doors to a fenced outdoor Exercise Area. Here our dogs play with each other off leash, enjoying sunshine and fresh air. Just beyond the Excercise Area are wooded trails that our devoted Dog Walkers use to take the dogs on their daily walks. |
 Training Room
Down the right corridor is the Training Room: a large multi-purpose room used for educational programs, community functions, dog training and exercise, and various other activities. |
